Scope and Content Fort and temporary camp at Balmuildy, East Dunbartonshire This Roman fort is at Balmuildy. It was built where the Military Way crossed over the River Kelvin. The fort was probably built in advance of the Antonine Wall, which runs in front of N rampart. There is a temporary camp on higher ground NE of the fort. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort is below the line of the Antonine Wall, in the middle of the image. The lines of the W ditches and ramparts can be seen as crop-marks, cut by the road in the lower left corner. A number of inscribed and sculptured stones have been found in or near the fort. Two state that the fort was built by the Second Legion Augusta, under the command of Quintus Lollius Urbicus. These are now in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
