Scope and Content Diagrams details of components of horizontal mills at Huxter, Mainland, Shetland The three horizontal mills stand along the burn that empties from the Loch of Huxter. Two are now shells, but a third is still thatched. Together, they hold enough original machinery to make a reconstruction possible. Each mill was positioned along the burn on the inside of a bend. Water flowed along the stone-lined lade (O), through the mill and back into the burn. Moveable boards in the burn and the lade controlled the strength of the flow.
