Scope and Content Diagram of working components of horizontal mills at Huxter, Mainland, Shetland The three horizontal mills stand along the burn that empties from the Loch of Huxter. Two are now shells, but a third is still thatched. Together, they hold enough original machinery to make a reconstruction possible. Water ran through the chute (A) to hit the wheel, so turning the upper of the two millstones (O). The clapper (P) bounced about on top, vibrating the feed-trough to keep the grain flowing out of the hopper (S) at the correct rate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
