Scope and Content Plan of water-supply system for horizontal mills at Huxter, Mainland, Shetland The three horizontal mills stand along the burn that empties from the Loch of Huxter. Two are now shells, but a third is still thatched. Together, they hold enough original machinery to make a reconstruction possible. Each mill was positioned along the burn on the inside of a bend. Water flowed along the stone-lined lade (O), through the mill and back into the burn. Moveable boards in the burn and the lade controlled the strength of the flow.
