Scope and Content North elevation of Bell Mill (also known as West Mill) at Stanley, Perthshire Bell Mill was completed by 1790 and is probably the best surviving example of a mill of this period. It is under 9 metres wide and has low ceilings. The outside is built in stone to first floor level, with locally made bricks above. The belfry is an original feature. Its bell would have been used to wake the workers in the village in the days before alarm clocks. Stanley was founded in 1785 by George Dempster, Richard Arkwright, inventor and industrialist, and a group of Perth merchants. Like New Lanark, founded in the same year, it was built as a model factory village. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
