Scope and Content Ground-floor plan of curing-house of fish-curing station at Wick, Caithness The curing-house backs onto a cliff close to the wharf in an area with plenty of room for carts and barrels. It housed workshops for preparing the fish and making the barrels, and also accommodation for the workers during the herring-fishing season. The ground floor held gutting areas (A), a salt store (B), and a firing berth (C). Outside the herring-fishing season, the ground floor served as a coopers' shop. The herring-fishing season, which took place during the summer, was very brief. The women worked at the curing-house while the men manned the fishing-boats.
