Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of one of the beds from house 1. It is built from stone slabs due to the scarcity of wood on the island. The corner are upright slabs, with horizontal slabs forming the sides. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
