Scope and Content Plans and sections of malt-barn at Port Ellen, Islay, Argyll The malt barn at Port Ellen is typical of its kind. Inside, barley is stored, then soaked in water, spread out and allowed to germinate. The resulting green malt is dried in a kiln before being used to make whisky. The elevator lifts the barley onto the conveyor belt or 'barley band'. The barley bogie spreads it on the barley loft floor. The grain trickles through the chutes onto the barley band and back to the elevator. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
