Scope and Content Diagram of beam and column connection in north range of Houldsworth's Cotton Mill in City of Glasgow Houldsworth's Cotton Mill was built in 1804-5 and is important because it was one of the first mills to built with fire safety in mind. This shows how the transverse beams supporting the brick jack-arches of the fire-proof north range were connected to the walls and the columns. The tie-rods run the length of the range, preventing the walls from bursting. The fireproof north range was built of brick on a cast-iron frame. The roof was supported on cast-iron trusses made from prefabricated sections bolted together. Steam from the engine passed through the hollow cast-iron columns, so heating the range.
