Scope and Content Diagram of wheel and pinion of mechanism inside horse-mill at West Gallaberry. Kirkton, Dumfries and Galloway The horse engine-house at West Gallaberry is one of very few to retain most of its driving-mechanism. However, its threshing machine no longer survives. The horse-wheel was made off interlocking or 'half-lapped' pieces of wood, and held together by wooden pegs. The beams or 'shears' supporting the lay-shaft are held together by metal tie-rods. Each turn of the horse-wheel spins the lay-shaft just over eight-and-a-half times, so driving the threshing-mill in the next-door barn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
