Scope and Content Diagram of wheel and pinion of mechanism inside horse-mill at West Gallaberry. Kirkton, Dumfries and Galloway The horse engine-house at West Gallaberry is one of very few to retain most of its driving-mechanism. However, its threshing machine no longer survives. This diagram shows how the bevelled iron ring on the horse-wheel turned the pinion on the lay-shaft. The pinion was kept in place by wooden beams held together by metal tie-rods. Each turn of the horse-wheel span the lay-shaft just over eight-and-a-half times, so driving the threshing-mill in the next-door barn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
