Scope and Content Diagram of horse-wheel mechanism inside horse-mill at West Gallaberry. Kirkton, Dumfries and Galloway The horse engine-house at West Gallaberry is one of very few to retain most of its driving-mechanism. However, its threshing machine no longer survives. The chains are clipped to the yokes on the horses which pull the wheel in an anti-clockwise direction. The teeth on the iron-ring on top of the wheel drive the small cog or 'pinion', turning the lay-shaft and powering the threshing mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
