Scope and Content View from north-east showing warehouses, Caol Ila Distillery, Islay, Argyll and Bute Caol Ila lies 0.75km north of Port Askaig, overlooking the Sound of Islay, with the distillery on the outskirts of the village. Founded in 1846, and built in one phase to a carefully thought out plan, it was substantially rebuilt between 1972 and 1974. Built in c.1900, this twenty-bayed, three-storeyed and attic warehouse is brick-built and is whitewashed, with the name of the distillery painted on the seaward side. Internally, it has timber slatted floors to allow air to circulate around the casks. Like all the Islay distilleries, Caol Ila was sited on the coast for access to water-transport. There is a small wooden pier nearby for boats distributing casks from the distillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
