Scope and Content Plan of ground floor and south wing of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. To make yarn, the raw wool was 'teased' into smaller pieces (1), carded (2, 3), joined into continuous strands and stretched (4) and passed to the first floor. Later it was washed and dyed in the south-wing and perhaps woven on the power looms (5, 6). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
