Scope and Content Partially reconstructed plan of kiln inside kiln-barn at Jubidale, Orkney The kiln-barn at Jubidale on Orkney is an example of the type of small traditional farm kiln and barn once used for drying oats and bere in the Northern Isles and the northern region of mainland Scotland, especially in Caithness. The grain would have been spread out on the drying floor (l) which would have been made of planks covered with a bed of straw. Once the hot air from the kiln had dried the grain, it could be swept through the chute (m) into the store (n). The heat came from the ingle-fire (g). The kiln acted like a chimney, sucking hot air (and smoke) from the fire and through the grain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
