Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of one of the stone-lined passages that link the houses together. It shows one of the doorways, with the roof lintel still in place. The passages are quite narrow and relatively low when compared to the houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
