Scope and Content Reconstruction of the henge phase at Cairnpapple Hill, West Lothian Cairnpapple Hill was the focus for ritual and ceremonial activity for about 3000 years. The hill-top location commands impressive views across central Scotland and retained great significance to the surrounding prehistoric communities. This drawing reconstructs the henge monument which was built around 2000BC. A pair of ditches flanked by earth banks, created an oval enclosure with causeways on the north and south. Inside this enclosed area was a circle of 24 standing stones. To construct a monument like this would require a large amount of labour as well as considerable skill and knowledge.
