Scope and Content Wattle fencing from excavation at 42 St Paul Street, Aberdeen Excavations in Aberdeen have uncovered remarkable evidence of the buildings and associated pottery, bone and stone artefacts of the earlier medieval period, as well as organic remains. This wattle fencing may have marked a boundary between plots of land, or perhaps formed part of an animal pen. It is unusual to find intact wattle because it is made from interlaced twigs which normally rot away. Medieval Aberdeen, a Royal Burgh by 1179, was a trading community with an economy based on fishing and making goods out of animal products like wool and leather. Though it had a castle by 1264, the town was unwalled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
