Scope and Content Ropewalk inside The Gourock Ropework at Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire The Gourock Rope Work was established in 1797. It gained a worldwide reputation. As well as making rope, it produced canvas and sailcloth. By 1900, these were waterproofed and carried the famous trademark 'Gourock A1 Birkmyre Proofed'. Strands of rope were spun together into thicker rope along these tracks. The toothed gate-rests were used to support longer pieces of rope so as to maintain the correct tension.
