Scope and Content Gate-rest inside The Gourock Ropework at Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire The Gourock Rope Work was established in 1797. It gained a worldwide reputation. As well as making rope, it produced canvas and sailcloth. By 1900, these were waterproofed and carried the famous trademark 'Gourock A1 Birkmyre Proofed'. During the spinning process, toothed gate-rests, along with stake-posts, were used to support longer pieces of rope so as to maintain the correct tension. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
