Scope and Content Membership certificate of Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow Ropemaker Society, from Gourock Ropeworks, Port Glasgow The Gourock Rope Work was established in 1797. It gained a worldwide reputation. As well as making rope, it produced canvas and sailcloth. By 1900, these were waterproofed and carried the famous trademark 'Gourock A1 Birkmyre Proofed'. The lower half illustrates the process of making rope by hand in the ropewalk. Workers are seen walking backwards twisting the yarn, each with a hank of yarn around his waist. The yarn is attached at one end to a spinning wheel. The workers used whale oil to grease their hands and the yarn. Some very thick ropes needed the combined strength of 70-80 men. Eventually, machines were introduced which went along narrow gauge railways. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
