Scope and Content Cloth-press inside woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. This cloth-press was used to press 'suiting material' before it was sold to tailors to make suits. Metal plates were inserted into the folded cloth which was then placed in the cloth-press and compressed using the turn-screw. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
