Scope and Content Details of weights and roller-shaft of spinning-jenny on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This spinning-jenny in the woollen mill at Bridgend was used to spin yarn from the slubbing-billy to which it was similar in design. Each batch of yarn was spun several times until it was fine enough. The yarn is passes between the weighted roller and the ridged or 'knurled' roller. Unless the knurled-roller is rotated, the mechanism acts like a clamp, holding the draft while it is spun. A batch or 'draft' of yarn is stretched out between the carriage and the frame. A roller clamps the frame end, and the draft is spun. Then the roller is rotated and the yarn is wound onto the spindles pulling the next draft through. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
