Scope and Content Waterwheel with chain-drive mechanism at woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. This 'breast-shot' iron waterwheel drove all the machinery in the mill. It has an unusual chain-drive mechanism, rather like that of a modern bicycle and unlike that of other mills which used shafts and gears. Inside the mill, the raw wool was 'teased' into smaller pieces, carded to remove impurities, joined into continuous strands and stretched, and then spun into yarn.
