Scope and Content Kiln-furnace with peat at Bowmore Distillery on Islay, Argyll Bowmore Distillery is said to have been founded in 1779 and has changed hands several times up to the present day. This kiln-furnace provides the heat to dry the green-malt spread out on the drying-floor above. It is fueled by peat which is piled up in front of it. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled, and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
