Scope and Content Warping-stakes on second floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. This set of warping-stakes was used to wrap a bar with parallel yarns, or 'warps', prior to weaving. Each spike held a bobbin loaded with yarn, one end of which was tied to the bar. The bobbins unwound as the bar wound up. To make yarn, the raw wool was 'teased' into smaller pieces, carded, joined into continuous strands and stretched, and then spun. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
