Scope and Content Fragments of a medieval grave-slab, Carruthers old parish church, Dumfries and Galloway Nothing remains of the medieval parish church of Carruthers, though a raised platform near the centre of the churchyard probably indicates the site. A number of medieval carved stones and architectural fragments are incorporated into the churchyard wall. Broken into at least five pieces, this large medieval gravestone bears a deeply incised Maltese cross on its face. In 1609, an Act of the Scottish parliament ordered that the parishes of Carruthers, Middlebie and Pennersaughs were to be merged. The church building was still standing around 1750, and the burial-ground contains a number of 18th-century headstones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
