Scope and Content Detail of box-bed and hurley-bed inside workers' housing at New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1785 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright. It passed to Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, in 1799. Owen developed the village into a model community, aiming to make it both profitable and humane. Originally, all the apartments were fitted with box-beds. They also had 'hurley-beds' - beds on wheels low enough to fit under the box beds. Two adults could comfortably share a bed. Decent housing for the workers was an important part of the Owen's humanitarian plan for his model industrial village. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
