Scope and Content Stone circle, near Moncreiffe House, Perthshire It is not known why stone circles were built. They might have had astronomical, ceremonial, or ritual significance. It is believed that the builders of the circles followed complex mathematical rules when constructing them. The stone circle at Moncreiffe shows evidence of change of use over time. It began as an open henge, then became a stone circle. Later it was used as a site for metal working. There is also evidence of a ring of upright timbers. One of the stones has at least 14 cupmarks on it. These are man-made depressions in the stone. No one knows why they were made, although there are many theories about their possible use.
