Scope and Content Plan of ice-house at Dunbeath, Highland The ice-house at Dunbeath is part of the herring- and salmon-fishing station which developed in stages around the mouth of the Dunbeath Water from the early 19th century onwards. The ice-house is built into the slope with turf (i) covering its vaulted roof (h, g). The outer room (B) was used for washing and weighing fish. Both floors are stone-flagged and sloped (b) to drain through the outlet (f) under the outer door (e). Fish to be frozen were placed in the freezing chamber (A) which was loaded with ice through hatch in the roof (a). The space between the two doors of the inner doorway (c) would be filled with sawdust to act as an insulator. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
