Scope and Content Cross-slab known as the Maiden Stone at Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire The Maiden Stone stands by the roadside at Chapel of Garrioch. Local legend says that it was named after the daughter of the laird of Balquhain who died during her elopement. This is a drawing of the stone which appeared in John Stuart's 1856 publication 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland'. It shows the SE face. At the top are beasts and a centaur. below is a notched-rectangle and Z-rod, a Pictish Beast and a mirror-and-comb. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
