Scope and Content Detail of waterwheel of grain-mill at Machrimore, Argyll and Bute The grain-mill at Machrimore was built in 1839 and is typical of 19th-century water-powered vertical mills. One of the last two working water-mills in Kintyre, it went out of service in the 1950s. Soon afterwards, most of its machinery was removed. The wheel is an example of a 'pitch-back waterwheel'. This means that the upper part moved towards the water, pitching back in the opposite direction from the flow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
