Scope and Content Runner stone used for shelling oats, New Cumnock, Ayrshire The shelling stone was used to shell oats. This was one of a pair of stones. The last miller, Mr Robertson had dressed the stones himself. The 'furrows and lands' he made can be seen on the surface of the stone. This stone is made from French freshwater quartz. This was exported in sections from France and joined together using plaster of Paris to form the stone which was then banded with iron. The French stone was much tougher than local stone and therefore lasted longer. In continual use a French burr-stone lasted about three to four weeks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
