Scope and Content Oatmeal runner stone, New Cumnock Mill, Ayrshire The runner stone is about 4 feet in diameter. It is one of a pair which would have been used for grinding oatmeal. The outer ring of the stone is made from French freshwater quartz. The inner ring is of sandstone from Largs. The sections of stone were joined together with plaster of Paris. Iron bands were put around the stone. The French stone was tougher than local stone and therefore lasted longer. In continual use a French burr-stone would last three to four weeks.
