Scope and Content Detail of louvres in airing loft of tannery on Mill Street, Ayr The tannery on Mill Street in Ayr is typical example of a provincial tannery, having a top-floor airing loft ventilated by louvres. The louvres were adjustable so that the air-flow could be controlled. This worked just like a set of Venetian blinds. Moving the pole-bar tilted all the boards, increasing or decreasing the gaps between them. It was important to control the air-flow because the drying leather would be damaged if it got too hot or too cold, especially if it froze. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
