Scope and Content Annotated pencil sketch inscribed on reverse 'The house where Sir Wm Wallace was born in the village of Elderslee 2 1/2 miles West of Paisley. The kitchen 6 is curiously arched & in the arch of the fireplace, which is very large, there is a passage which leads under ground about 100 yds to the rivulet adjoining & to the east, but now filled up. There he concealed himself when necessary. The house is very old. To the left of it the large Yew tree which is of large size and consequently great age. Around it is now a garden. The other houses are also, mostly, very old. Walleces oak, stood about 200 yds to the left on the road side.' (inscription on reverse accompanied by sketch of kitchen fireplace)
