Scope and Content Beam-drill inside smithy at Machrimore, Strathclyde The smithy at Machrimore was built as part of the estate and was in use until the late 1960s. This is an example of a traditional beam-drill. The weight of the heavy wooden beam rests on the brace-and-bit drill turned by the blacksmith, making it easier to bore holes in metal.
