Scope and Content Gear cupboard at East Cluden Mill, Dumfriesshire Water power was widely used for grain-milling and threshing. A lot of the remaining water-mills belong to the period of agricultural improvement which took place after 1750. This view shows the gear cupboard from the south east. The machinery was quite complex. It was powered by a wooden shaft driving as many as five pairs of stones and other pieces of equipment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
