Scope and Content William Robertson Building from the north-west, David Hume Tower and the Adam Ferguson Building, University of Edinburgh, George Square, Edinburgh George Square was selected for the extension of the University of Edinburgh in the late 1940s. Several large new buildings and towers were constructed during the 1960s, to designs by the following architects: Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson with Andrew Merrylees (Main Library); Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (David Hume Tower, William Robertson Building, Adam Ferguson Building and the George Square Theatre); and Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners (Appleton Tower). This shows the east side of the square with the long, four-storeyed block of the William Robertson Building (built 1964-7) on the left, faced with golden stone. The 14-storeyed tower in the centre of the photograph is David Hume Tower (built 1960-3) clad in stone, slate and glass, and the block far right is part of the four-storeyed Adam Ferguson Building (built 1960-3). David Hume Tower, the William Robertson and Adam Ferguson buildings were designed for the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, and provide lecture theatres, libraries and tutorial rooms. Raised walkways conceal lecture rooms, a courtyard and car parking on a lower level, which was part of a wider scheme for the area which was not fully implemented. The University of Edinburgh George Square Development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
