Scope and Content Craigton Pictish symbol stone, Edderton, Sutherland Dr J. Stuart was the founder of The Spalding Club, Aberdeen, which was formed to record the history of the North East. In 1856 he published 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland'. It contained detailed drawings of the Pictish Stones. This red sandstone pillar, possibly a reused standing stone, has incised symbols of a fish, a double disc, and a Z rod. Very little is known about the meaning of the symbols but they are the most important information we have about the Picts. There are about 40-50 symbols used by the Picts. They can be divided into two groups: representations of animals, usually real but sometimes mythical, and abstract designs. There are some which appear to be patterns.
