Scope and Content View of East Cluden Mill, Dumfriesshire Water power was widely used for grain-milling and threshing. A lot of the remaining water-mills belong to the period of agricultural improvement which took place after 1750. This view of the mill from the north west shows the waterwheels. The waterwheels took the force of the water on their paddles and this caused an axle to be turned. The power was transferred via gearing to the millstones to grind the grain. The wall which had the axle through it was always carefully built with dressed stone blocks and lime mortar. This was to protect the wall from the constant rushing of the water and and the vibration of the wheel. Other walls were built with random rubble. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
