Scope and Content Barley-bogie and band inside Benriach Distillery, Elgin, Moray Benriach Distillery was built in 1898 but bought out and closed in 1900. It was reopened after 1965 when it was rebuilt by Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. It was sold to Seagram Company Ltd of Canada in 1977. An elevator dumps barley into the conveyor belt or 'barley band'. The wheeled 'barley-bogie' spreads it evenly on the floor below. It then trickles through the holes in the floor onto the 'barley-band' which takes it back to the elevator. The system of elevator, barley band and bogie is needed because the stored grain must be kept dry and well aired before it is turned to malt by soaking it in the steeps and allowing it to germinate on the malting floor. It is then dried in the kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
