Scope and Content Bonded warehouses at Port Ellen, Islay Port Ellen distillery was founded in 1825 by A. K. Mackay & Co. It changed hands several times in the early 20th century, and fell into disuse in 1929. It expanded and reopened in 1966-7. Like most bonded warehouses, the ones at Port Ellen were built to be secure. Since 1823 it has been legal to store whisky 'in bond' without paying duty on it until its sale. Security measures prevent both theft and attempts to evade paying duty. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
