Scope and Content Casks and tools at Edradour Distillery, Perthshire Edradour Distillery was founded in 1837 and was the last of the small farm distilleries. It was still operating on a small scale in the late 19th century, and employed all the traditional methods and equipment until the 1960s. After distillation, the whisky is put in oak casks to mature. The casks were labelled using the stencils on the shelf. The jugs may have been used to measure whisky for selling direct from the cask. This was allowed until the Maturation Act of 1915. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
