Scope and Content Malting-floor at Bowmore Distillery on Islay, Argyll Bowmore Distillery is said to have been founded in 1779 and has changed hands several times up to the present day. These workers are turning barley using traditional wheeled hoppers and wooden spades or 'shiels'. The barley is gradually germinating and turning into malt. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled, and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
