Scope and Content Malt-barn at Ardbeg, Islay, Argyll The malt barn at Ardbeg is typical of its kind. It was built to process large batches of barley, turning them into malt. Barley is loaded into the barley-loft through the upper-level door. Later, once it has been soaked and germinated, the green malt is dried in the kiln on the left. Malt is vital to making whisky. Barley is soaked in water, then spread out and allowed to germinate. The resulting green malt is dried in a kiln before passing onto the next stage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
