This design, by Sir Basil Spence, for a filling station in a 'gap' site between two late Georgian tenements, has a row of petrol pumps in front of the ground-floor semicircular reception area, and a large glass-fronted showroom on the upper floor. Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) made his career with his design for the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral in 1950. He designed many buildings in Edinburgh in the 1960s, including several university buildings in George Square, and Mortonhall Crematorium. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
