Scope and Content General view of Laphroaig Distillery Laphroaig Distillery started in the mid-19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the kind of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large commercial complex. This is an overall view of the distillery in 1900. Over the previous 60 years, buildings had been added whenever they were required. It had no pier, so supplies had to be put into carts from the boats at low tide. Laphroaig is a good example of the earlier distilleries which evolved over time, rather than being built to a plan.
