Scope and Content Cross-section of Broch of Mousa, Shetland The broch of Mousa stands on a low rocky headland on the west side of the island. The broch of Burraland stands opposite on the mainland. It has been cleared out twice in recent times and remains the best-preserved of all the brochs in Scotland. The entrance passage to the broch is long because the wall is very thick. The interior of the broch is only six metres across. The layout of the interior illustrates a wheel-house inserted in the 3rd-4th century AD. The broch is mentioned twice in the Orkneyinga Saga where it is called Moseyjarborg. One of these occasions was in 1153AD when it was used by Earl Harald. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
