Scope and Content Settlement at Ardnave, Islay, Argyll and Bute This settlement is at Ardnave on Islay. A house was built in a hollow on a sand-hill. A smaller house was later built within the interior. The structure was subsequently covered in a layer of wind-blown sand, preserving the remains. This is a view in section of an area dug over by a spade. The colour difference clearly shows where the spade was dug in and the earth turned over. This ties in with other evidence for agriculture on the site. The site has been excavated. As well as a complete Food Vessel and other pottery, finds included flint and stone tools, animal bones including sheep and red deer, fish bones, shellfish and crab. There was also evidence for the cultivation of barley. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
